Be BOLD 🧞‍♀️ Be DARING

Picture

Taking a risk is, taking a risk and as a guest participant of @oneroomchallenge with designers nationwide, I felt empowered, motivated and definitely inspired to take risks that I might not have taken otherwise. During these past 8 weeks I have pushed myself to be a little more bold and a little more daring, while working hard to complete my Home Office Re-Magined design.

I have mixed carpet and drapery patterns with floral tapestry. I added a bold accent wall, I recovered my heirloom chair for longevity, maintaining the integrity of the chair style with fabric that transcends time. I figured out a creative way to store my magazine collection. I re-wired a vintage chandelier and have utilized furniture and accessories from my own home.

There’s a lot of quirky and special items in this room but that’s the fun part for me, it keeps me on my toes and reminds me that it’s ok to be different!

Fun facts about this project:

Items repurposed:
  1. The drapery panels, fabric by @maxwellfabrics
  2. A 4’ x 8’ piece of sheet metal as a magnetic mood board
  3. The crystal vintage chandelier, from a client
  4. Recovered my heirloom chair
  5. The handmade desk by my dad
  6. The white Kallax shelving unit by @ikea
  7. The rods and brackets (that I spray painted) and finials
  8. The lamps
  9. My magazine collection
  10. The accent wall paint color by @sherwinwilliams

New items purchased:
  1. Blossom, Sound Waves carpet by @stantoncarpet
  2. Velvet floral tapestry fabric, Fluer de Nuit @designersguild
  3. Pink trim @divayarn
  4. Wall and ceiling paint Silverplate, by @sherwinwilliams
Picture
Here’s my takeaway from being involved with the #oneroomchallenge:
▪️It takes determination to repurpose. Seriously! It’s a lot of work. I could have easily walked into a store and purchased all new pieces but I keep my focus on utilizing design items from my home - even down to the drapery rod brackets. I had the correct size of bracket but not the right color. I dug through my paint shed and found a spray can of silver paint and sprayed the brackets to match the others.
▪️The pressure to complete this project in 8 weeks is motivating and challenging. Watching all the other designers manage their projects throughout the weeks kept me inspired and focused.
▪️The support and feedback from new friends of the One Room Challenge and my clients propelled me to keep the momentum and to do my best.

There’s a lot of quirky things in this room but that’s the fun part for me, it keeps me on my toes and reminds me that it’s ok to be different!

SNEAK PEEK

Picture
Here’s a sneak preview, because I can hardly contain myself with how beautiful my Home Office space is turning out. It takes a lot of people to make a project successful and this week has been about results. My trusted trades never let me down, these guys showed up and made things happen. Builder Dan, Upholsterer Dale and Workroom Jan all hustled to help move this project along. They too are feeling the excitement and are proud to share in my vision and see the room come together.

Builder Dan spent half a day helping me install rods and drapery, secure my magnetic inspiration design board (a 4’ x 8’ piece of sheet metal), hang the vintage chandelier in the corner and switch out the beige outlets for gray ones. We both marveled at how the drapery dampened the sound in the room and how magnificent the “re-wired” chandelier cast a beautiful glow on the walls.

It was productive to meet with Upholsterer Dale in his cutting room. In awe, we unrolled the velvety fabric revealing the gorgeous botanical images. He skillfully measured, as we walked through the best layout for covering the seat, the backrest and back of chair fabric for placement. With a straight edge a marker and sharp scissors, he fearlessly cut out each section. Seeing the fabric on the chair brought the flowers to life.

I consult Workroom Jan, working with her to create custom bedding, pillows and drapery. Jan is the one who originally made these custom drapes 10 years ago for my downtown office. I selected the fabric because of the pattern; it reminded me of a Greek Key. Although the sound dampening treatment, sewn between the fabric and the lining, was applied to muffle the street noise it’s remarkably relevant in today’s home office setting, buffering the outside noises during virtual client meetings. These drapes have gone from my downtown office, to my home bedroom, to the backdrop of different themes for my Homeshow booths, stored in my closet and now modified by Jan, to fit floor to ceiling in my Home Office.

Putting all the pieces together requires many hands and honestly that’s the best part of being a designer. I look forward to next week when I can reveal the full room.

FLASH & SPARKS

Picture
Here we go with week 6….we’re on the home stretch!

While I am patiently waiting for my baseboard and closet door to arrive I decided to finally re-wire my chandelier. Oh geeze, I almost blew the house up. Sparks were literally flying! But after a little finessing, voilà, I did it!!!

Update on my drapes: They are completed and ready to install! Can’t wait to have them hanging in my room!

Update on my chair: Sadly I don’t think it will be completed in time for final photos… :-( I won’t cry… it’s just the way things are right now.

My next task is to order a quart of paint to finish the niche in the ceiling. I thought we had enough paint to touch this part up and was all excited to get this ceiling done…but my hubby informed me that we used every last drop in the can and there is literally no paint left! I really don’t feel like driving 30 min to the closest paint store for a quart of paint…so, this touch up will have to wait until next week, too! That’s ok, I have PLENTY to do to get this room looking like a functioning office space.

Next week will be so exciting to see so many things come together! So stay tuned and follow along in my stories and check out my blog, link in my bio!

I’m so in love with my new space and it’s not even finished yet!

Fringe💗Ribbon🖤Trimmings
Picture
It’s week 5 of the #oneroomcgallenge...WOWZA!

Time is flying by and standing still at the same time. Kind of like how the last year has felt where there is so much happening but nothing at all. My chair is being reupholstered, my drapes are being altered, my chandelier is still sitting in the same spot as last week and my molding is back ordered! The momentum seems to have halted even though things are still in motion.

So today I decided it was time to take a break and head over to the nearest seaside town of Port Townsend and visit one of my favorite little shops. This shop sells buttons and yarn and fringe and ribbons and beautiful trimmings. It’s basically in the hallway of an ancient Victorian building on the corner of Taylor and Water Street. Once inside, this hallway of sorts, you forget about the rushing coastal wind that was just blowing across your face and the spectacular water view of sail boats and the Washington State ferry sailing through the harbor. Once inside, you dream of the many uses of each of these trimmings, the hem of a dress or a funky button for a pillow not yet made. My mind starts to process and create and imagine so many design scenarios I repeat them to myself so I don’t forget to make them when I return home. You see, there’s still one more item I need for my queen chair before it can be completed, the trim, otherwise known as gimp. According to Webster’s dictionary, gimp is: an ornamental flat braid or round cord used as a trimming. This is what I need to finish the fabric edge for my chair.

There are so many beautiful trimmings at this little shop that I narrowed it down to 2! Pink or black! I love both of the colors. The black is sleek and classic and would blend into the wood on the chair. Whereas the pink is soft and would add a pretty contrast to the wood on the chair. I have taken so many fun risks with this space that the pink seems more in line with my other choices. Clutching the spools, I decided to buy both colors, 8 yards of each. The merchant asked what I’m doing with these pretty trimmings, I showed her a picture of my chair and the floral fabric and explained it’s for the edging.

With my trimmings measured, cut and purchased, I walk back through the musty hallway out into the wind feeling excited and inspired!

Next stop, elevated ice cream and the candy shop!

Which color do you prefer, let’s take a vote, black or pink? 🖤💗

Vintage Chandelier Re-Wire 💡

Picture
It’s week 4 of the #oneroomchallenge and I’m “plugging” away (pun intended) with my Home Office Re-Magined project as I take on re-wiring this vintage chandelier!

“Sure, I’ll take it” I hesitantly said as I was trying to figure out where I would put this sparkly ornate chandelier. Maybe my stairwell, maybe a bathroom, I’ll figure out someplace for this beauty...and that’s where my story of this chandelier begins, in a box, in a garage, offered to me.

This traditional crystal chandelier measuring 17” high by 26” wide is dripping with crystals in the shapes of teardrops, pendaloques, beads and a ball finial. I have seen and read about many versions of this type of chandelier and these types of cut crystals. History tells us about the original use of these elegant fixtures using candles with the flame to reflect off of the cut crystals illuminating a room. The only history of this piece that I know of, is that it once was in a dining room of a home built sometime in the 80’s. It’s now my turn to re-purpose it and give it new life, and I know just the room for it, my home office!

My goal is to make the scale of this chandelier work in my room and to figure out how to re-wire its existing “hard wire” to a “plug-in” version. I have an existing single light on a long cord that plugs in and I’m thinking of re-wiring that cord to this chandelier....I will spend this week figuring out where I want to hang it and how I will accomplish this task! I can’t wait to see it light up my office!

This weeks #oneroomchallenge task:
  1. Re-wire the cord.
  2. How to make the cord attractive.
  3. Where and how to hang this light.
  4. What type of bulbs will work best for this space.

Wish me luck and I’ll take any suggestions for the electrical re-wiring task!

HEIRLOOM pieces are my ❤️

Picture
Would you consider a piece of furniture a living memoir? These two memoirs, this queen chair and this understated desk, played a big role in the design and inspiration process for my Home Office Re-Magined of the #oneroomchallenge.

See this little gal sitting proudly on this chair? That’s me pretending to model at about 2 years old, while being introduced to antiques, fabric and texture. I can say I don’t remember this greenish fabric but I do remember and still have the chair in the red ornate pattern. I have carted this relic around with me for years. I’m not sure how it ended up in my home and not in another one of my large family members homes but probably because of my love for antique pieces that mean something to me. This chair, as the story goes, was not quite so ornate and apparently needed new fabric, shortly after this photo of my young modeling career. My dad, builder, creator, designer, and fixer of all things, embellished it and recovered it, making it fit for a king, only now it’s for a queen! I will carry on the tradition and recover this favorite chair of mine, with ornate and velvety fabric, too. I chose this yummy soft and velvety fabric made in Italy and beyond beautiful. The first time I experienced this floral print was in Paris. I was attending the International trade fair Maison and Object and while wandering through one of the many booths I saw a sofa covered in this floral fabric. I was actually able to sit on the sofa and I remember just sitting there and petting it. I took so many photos of that sofa and have referred to them often, dreaming of that fabric for the next 3 years. Then along came this carpet, the drapes and now this chair I knew this floral fabric would be the perfect choice. This fabric was not cheap it’s pricey! Believe me, I looked at many other alternative choices in blacks and grays and almost a hot pink but when I rediscovered this floral velvet I couldn’t look back. The fabric has arrived and it and the chair have been sent off to be reupholstered!

My new home office is not very big so finding a piece that fits in the space and looks the part was a little tricky. Thinking of the charcoal and black undertones in my carpet, this desk seemed to be the right feel and scale. It too is a piece my dad made, this time from scratch! He curved and laminated the top and attached the understated ornate legs creating this small and functional desk, perfect for my office.
You see, my dad has since passed away and he meant the world to me, he is the one that introduced me to the world of design. By having these 2 heirloom items, this chair and this desk, in my office, it is a way for me to honor my dad and the past, and carry each piece into the future.

This room has become a bricolage of new and old and I LOVE it.

Home Office Re-Magined
Inspiration = Carpet • Paint • Drapes

Picture

Carpet

Where does inspiration come from? That’s a great question! It’s different for everyone and it shows up different all the time for me. For my home office space, the inspiration appeared at a flooring store. While I was looking for carpet for a client, I noticed this crazy carpet with pinks and grays and charcoal colors. Something about it struck me, the interweaving of the colors the movement of the pattern the excitement I felt looking at it. It’s crazy and fun but calming and fluid. The tactile effects were luxurious. I sat there and looked at it and debated about even bringing it home. The strange part is nothing in our home is gray or pink and carpet was not designated for this room.

Carpet sample in hand I toted it into our home and said to my husband, look at this crazy, fun, super soft carpet. He liked it, which is important because he will have to look at it everyday, too. Our styles our usually in sync and he said, why not, let’s have some fun!

So here is the inspiration! The luxurious crazy, intertwined pink and charcoal carpet! Now what!
Picture
Paint

I didn’t intend another wild and crazy thing for this room BUT while I was digging around in my surplus of paint samples, an unopened quart with the name Pleasure, caught my attention. Hmmmmm let’s see what this is. I opened the can and wowza, this bold and beautiful paint color appeared. There was just enough to accent a wall. The tone was right and again, why not, let’s have some fun.
The surrounding walls and ceiling received a much more muted color, Silverplate by Sherwin Williams. This room did not get retextured like the rest of our home during our recent remodel, and the texture on the walls and ceiling is referred to as a heavy “knock down”. It’s not my favorite but I didn’t want to change it so I chose to let it be part of the “texture” theme for this room and now I’m loving it.
Picture
Drapes

This is where it gets fun!
Repurposing, as much as possible, is always top on my to-do list! It’s a challenging task and requires a daring vision. These drapes have been “around the block” so to speak, they started out as drapes in my downtown office space. The ceilings were 12’ feet high, surrounded by tall ornate moldings from the vintage 1929 building they inhabited. Set from ceiling to floor and hung with grommets on rods with sound proofing material between layers, the subdued vertical Greek Key pattern offered strength, elegance and comfort. Their next adventure sent them to my booth at a local home show. There, they appeared grand and were the perfect backdrop to showcase my current designs. From there they ended up in protective bags stored away, awaiting their next adventure.
Here will be there next stop, they will have to be modified to fit the lower ceiling height of 8 feet. After a bit of measuring and determining the correct length and width, they are now safely in the hands of a skilled seamstress altering them to perfection.
Picture
Pattern, texture, repeat! What’s your inspiration? Is it daring, bold, or more subdued?

Follow along on my Instagram stories for behind the scene activity.

Next week we’ll look at the heirloom pieces I’ll be incorporating, bringing in more pattern and more texture....why not? Let’s have some fun!

Home Office Re-Magined🌸

Picture
Week 1

The Spring 2021 #orc has begun and I’m diving in!

Do you have an EVERYTHING room but a NOTHING room in your home?

Ya, that’s what this room was... super embarrassing to show the before photos....

Sometimes it’s hard to get motivated and to follow through and complete a rooom in your own home. Thats why I’m participating in the @oneroomchallenge @bhgorc where I will be redesigning my own dedicated OFFICE space and the challenge is, to complete it in 8 weeks!

The ORC mission statement says it all:

One Room Challenge™ Mission Statement
The One Room challenge™ will provide participants with a supportive, enthusiastic forum in which to share the process of transforming a room. The ORC is not a competition, but rather a celebration of creativity, inspiration, and original ideas.

Working from home has definitely forced the workplace, dedicated space, to take full priority! But it’s not quite as inspiring for me to come home after work and design and decorate my personal office, it just hasn’t happened....until this challenge came along and I jumped at the opportunity...hey, we all love a good challenge, right? Well, I do!!!

Here’s my goal:
To create a dedicated office space that’s inspiring, comfortable and efficient!

Here’s my top priorities:
  1. Find room for my magazine collection
  2. Repurpose as much as possible
  3. Remember to leave space for my yoga mat
  4. Love my space

I will be repurposing:
•Draperies I had custom made years ago from my husbands former office.
•A desk my dad made many years before I was even born.
•A sentimental family (queen) chair.
•A Chrystal chandelier that was being discarded.
•A wild color of paint I happened to have a quart of in my storage closet.

I’ll be updating my flooring, wall colors, lighting and room configuration.

I’ve been keeping my inspiration piece, the flooring, a secret but I can’t contain myself anymore...honestly, it’s kinda bold! My husband and I both LOVE it, he even said, why not, let’s be daring! So it’s ordered and on its way!

Check out this carpet! To me it feels amazing, no only by touch but also the movement, the energy and the colors! It reminds me of the spring cherry blossoms budding right now, the vibrant pinks and the branches carrying soft white flowers. I may spend more time on the floor then in my chair! We were going to continue the hardwood flooring into the office but during the start of the pandemic, we were smack dab in the middle of a full remodel, everything in our upstairs was torn up and cleared out! Every room but this room, it still had the old carpet floors and something about it was familiar and cozy. It also had everything piled high like a storage unit....
That’s why I’m excited for this challenge, it’s inspiring and motivating!

Let the spring cleaning begin! Happy decorating!

PLAYING WITH CLAY TONES

Picture
Here on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State, we are fortunate to be surrounded by dozens of small successful family farms. Self-sustainability is not a trend in these parts, it’s a way of life. Staff at garden stores and plant nurseries I’ve visited recently (yes, on my search for the perfect pumpkins and gourds) tell me that since the start of the pandemic in late winter and early spring, their phones have been ringing off the hook. It’s been challenging to keep up with the constant flood of questions from customers suddenly interested in sowing and tending their own edible gardens.

Our soil here is full of clay, and we amend it with dark rich worm casings, compost, and manure. Our moody skies shift from sea to mountain over our valleys with fog, mist, and rain. Through fall and winter, the air smells of salt, pewter, and ore, reminding me of the colors in this Emerald Designer Color Collection palette by Sherwin Williams.

Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, I’ve always designed clients’ interior spaces with the outdoors in mind. Earth tones warm and soothe; they feel as familiar as the ground we walk on. Combined with marble or concrete surfaces and punctuated with one-of-a-kind upcycled hardware like this dreamy spigot I treated myself to, from Turkey, earth tones pull together any space—from rustic and rural, to funky and friendly, to urban and sophisticated.

TAKING CUES FROM THE BLUES

9/22/2020

Picture

Entering into the first week of fall, before we turn to pumpkins and all things orange and black and pumpkin spice, I’m thinking about color and how it ties in with mood and change. Whether you live in a place with four seasons or two—and with or without this global pandemic lingering on and blurring our sense of time—there is a “feeling” to the end of vacation and the start of school, or as the French call it, la rentrée.

With days already beginning to shorten here on the North Olympic Peninsula, one color palette I’m holding onto from summer are the blues, specifically, true blueberry blue and denim blue like this Maxwell Fabric, Podcast. Crisp and clean set against white, cream, or gold and mustard tones, sincere and stabilizing deeper richer blues mirror the transition away from the baby blue skies of summer. Darker blues, like 2020, are serious; and there is work to be done.
